What is the current shift from Behaviorist to Brain-Based parenting?
If you feel like "old school" parenting methods aren't working for your family, this message is for you.
Most of our discipline practices today are based on experiments with lab rats from the 1960s that were then applied to raising children.
For example:
A lab rat is on a wheel and gets a piece of cheese = positive association with the wheel = a positive reinforcement = a reward.
A lab rat is on a wheel and gets an electric shock = negative association with the wheel = a negative reinforcement = a punishment or consequence.
This behaviorist system of "modifying behavior" was a vast improvement to corporeal punishment rooted in white supremacy and colonialism.
Yet, the consequences and reward model doesn't reach the highest potentials of humanity AND focuses exclusively on behavior.
We also know that behavior is simply the outer manifestation of our inner experiences.
Behavior is about our current stress levels, basic needs, and support.

Kids today are motivated by fairness and justice. They stand for what is right and expect us to as well.
This generation responds well when we are reasonable and speak to the "Highest Good."
Positive relationship connection and empowerment are 1) our primary discipline tools and 2) the building blocks for our children's emotional well-being and mental health.
Most of us have to do DOUBLE the work: teaching ourselves this model of discipline while teaching it to our children. It's a lot!
Here's to parenting tools and discipline practices that align our values with our actions, while cultivating the highest potential in the next generation.
